Put the Marketing back into Network Marketing
By Kelly Araneda
What is it that attracted you into network marketing, or multi-level marketing? Was it the idea of waking up without the alarm clock and walking across the hall to work in your pajamas? Was it a yearning to escape the concrete jungle and the maddening commute? Were you lured by the prospect of spending just a few hours (or maybe minutes) a day at your lap top while sipping sodas by the pool and watching the money roll in? It’s ok if you were. LOTS of us got started with a dream or a whim. But if you’re in this game to win it, then your illusions were very quickly dispelled, am I right?
What happened? You did what your upline told you to do! You bought the leads, you have the auto responder, you’re writing the BEST sales letters in the industry, right? So where’s the money that’s supposed to be piling up?
Well, lets face facts here: The success of any MLM business is completely dependent on the ability of its people to promote and advertise the program and the products. Here’s the catch: VERY few MLMers have any idea at all of how to even begin a successful marketing campaign and are therefore, less than successful.
No matter how great your product or how pretty your website, you will not be successful in MLM until you learn to market. Nothing happens until marketing happens. Don’t believe me? Then go and purchase a boat load of your company’s top product and dump it in your drive way. What’s it going to do for you there? Not a whole lot until you decide how to MOVE that product, and that means marketing.
One of the top three reasons for the high failure rate in MLM is the lack of effective marketing skills amongst its members. Here’s a little test to see if you are one of the many marketing-challenged MLMers out there:
1) Can you define your business metrics?
2) What is your cost to acquire a new business partner?
3) What is your total return on investment for each new partner?
4) What is the lifetime value for each new partner?
5) Is your business plan comprised solely of your primary MLM opportunity or does your plan include a front end retail system that funds your marketing campaign?
6) Do you know which of your marketing efforts is producing the most results? Can you track the source of each lead?
7) Can you identify your target market?
8) What are some key words your target market might use when doing an online search for your company?
9) Do you have your own lead generation system?
10) Do you have a system for following up with your leads over the course of 3-5 months or more?
These are just a sampling of the kinds of things every MLM business owner needs to be able to understand and handle effectively. Notice that none of the questions ask how good you are at making cold calls. That’s old school and if you’re still doing that, good luck! Even if you do get some downline via cold calls, they will most likely resist the idea of contacting anyone the way you contacted them! And remember, duplication is the name of the game.
This is the difference between owning and running a successful business, and playing at a hobby. Put the Marketing back into Network Marketing and run your MLM opportunity like a CEO. Take the time and make the effort to educate yourself on this respectable and honorable industry. Look around and you will find that Network Marketing is no game and it produces over the top incomes for the leaders who produce over the top marketing campaigns. Will you be one of them?
