MLM Scam Alert - Using Pleasure Versus Pain Marketing to Your Advantage
By Tania Mesar
If you read the headline for this article accurately, you will notice that it was called MLM Scam Alert. Think back to the emotions that you felt when you read that title. Perhaps you stopped in your tracks to think about what new evidence came out that was pointing to a particular MLM scam that you had no idea about, or perhaps you were wondering if just maybe the MLM business that you are involved in was an MLM scam. Or maybe you were even wondering if there was some law that just passed that indicated that MLM marketing as a whole is a big scam.
First off, I would like to point out that I personally have never encountered an MLM scam, and I have looked pretty hard for one. If you are worried that the MLM company that you are considering to become a part of or, are already a part of is some sort of scam, you can do your research by doing an Online search for the Better Business Bureau. From there you can type in your search, and it will indicate the validity of many different businesses- a great tool.
What is the Psychology of the MLM Scam Alert Headline?
How can we as MLM marketers can use this concept to our advantage? This is simple. It is just human nature for us to be more attracted to read headlines that are negative, or have implications to painful experiences than we are to take a closer read of articles, or stories that talk about positive things.
We see a strong example of this sort of marketing in the news. Any news reporter knows, that negative and painful headlines sell. Psychologically we are drawn to these headlines for many reasons, one of which is that as humans we are more likely to avoid pain then we are to strive to seek out pleasure. Thus, we assume that yes, the pleasurable things are happening in the background…but we want to know about the immediate pain that could be effecting on us can have so we can avoid it at all cost.
Using Pain Marketing to Our Advantage in MLM
Once we understand the psychology of pain marketing, we know that for people to want to look into something more, they have to associate a much larger pain with not doing it.
Example #1: You most likely opened this article for the MLM Scam headline, than you did for the second part of it that shows you how to use pleasure v.s. pain marketing to your advantage, even though the latter half of this title is the part that will actually help get you to where you need to be in your marketing efforts.
Example #2: Statistically speaking, the majority of articles that get the most views have a negative headline. You should be thinking now about how you can adjust your headlines to take advantage of this.
Example # 3: In any offer, presentation, webcast or meeting you do. You will have much more success, if you find two things: What’s in it for them (why would they want to use a product, or join a business) and also make sure that you find out their ‘anti-why’. What this means is not so much ‘why they want to do something but what pain they will experience if they don’t take action. This will be the driving force in prospects who become motivated to join your business.
