Escape the Rat Race and Beat the 45 Year Plan

By Ewan N MacLeod

Whether we know it or not, most of us have signed up to ‘the 45 Year Plan.’ That’s the conventional approach to life. You leave school at 18 with a firm idea of what you want to do for a living, you maybe spend a few years getting further qualifications such as a University or college diploma or an apprenticeship, then around the age of 20 you are launched into your career. Well done! You are on your way to success. The money you earn in your first job seems like a lot, when compared with how much you had at school, or as a student.

Except, there are a few things that nobody told you. First of all, it’s called the 45 Year Plan for a reason. It’s because it lasts 45 years. You earn a decent salary and hopefully you put money away for a pension (you wish!). But then, about 45 years after you started work at age 20, you hit retirement at age 65. You’re happy to retire, after all those long years working at your job! Who wouldn’t want to quit work?

Except, that’s where the problem lies. The average person’s pension is only a fraction of what they were earning before, perhaps as little as a third. (Unless you’re a politician, a leading banker, or government worker, in which case you will probably get an index-linked, fully guaranteed, inflation protected, gold-plated final salary pension). For the rest of us who are funding those kind of pensions and keeping our politicians and bankers in the luxury to which they have become accustomed, when we retire our salary drops to about a third of what it was before. Who can get by on a third of what they are earning now?

But wait, it gets worse. When you left school, nobody mentioned to you that, during those 45 years in which you work your socks off, you need to keep working. If you become ill, you lose your income. If you want to take a vacation or some time off, you won’t get paid. Sure, some companies give you paid leave and weekends off, but I bet if you add up all your unpaid overtime, you’re still basically a paid slave. You must work day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, from the day you leave school to the day you retire. Then your salary drops to about a third of what it was. That’s the 45 Year Plan, right there. You signed up to it when you were 20 years old. Well done.

During those 45 years, life is pretty tough. You need to keep working. You need to stay employed, or your income evaporates overnight. Most of us are highly motivated to do this. We get up at maybe 6:30 am. You get washed, shaved and showered, have breakfast, and perhaps you are out the door by 7:30. You commute into work. The lucky few will have a house within walking distance of our place of work, but most of us will have to drive some distance, or take the train, or force our way through the commuter crowds. Maybe you finish work at 6 pm, depending on how pressurized your job is. Then you commute home again, eat your evening meal, enjoy what little is left of the evening, and get ready to do it all over again the next day.

It’s a hard life, but it’s what most of us are used to. We are sold into this plan during our school years. Most of us don’t realize that there is another way.

But there is another way. It’s called the Internet way. Many have found that the Internet lets them escape this rat race which they have unwittingly become part of. They can work from home, missing out the daily commute. They can use the vast marketing potential of the Internet to earn good money, an income that grows as time goes on. That income can steadily start to take off, producing enough to live on. And just as the Internet never sleeps, many have found that their income keeps coming in, allowing them to beat the 45 Year Plan, escape the rat race, and spend more time on the finer things of life.

This promise is not a dream for the privileged few, but it is achievable for the many people who understand how Internet marketing really works, and how they can take advantage of it. There are techniques and skills that can be learned by anyone, and when put into practice, they will earn an income that grows over time. Why not escape the rat race? The Internet is here to stay, and there is no better time than now, to make your future one that involves the Internet.
