Build-a-List Training

In the traditional days of network marketing, you joined a company, and your upline or the person that sponsored you gave you some very specific tasks to do. We are going to take a look at one of those tasks to see if they way they did this task was good or is there a better way to do this task. This task is building a list.

I remember that my first task was to go home and make a list. I had approximately 24 hours to make a list of at least 100 people that I knew that I would eventually have to contact. You know the first group of people that I had to list was all of my relatives. After I listed my relatives’ names I had to start listing my friends. After the friends, I had to list my associates. My associates included everyone that I came in contact with on a daily basis. It included people at my church, people I ran into while shopping, my doctor and everybody at his office, my dentist and people at his office, to name just a few. Oh, and by the way, I was to make sure I had a phone number.

Let’s take a minute and see if any of that made sense. Well, I will say that the idea of a list is a something that is very important. If you run any type of business, you definitely need some type of a customer list. So in that aspect, the traditional network marketers were correct. The question is whether everyone on my list is someone that might be interested in what I am doing.

This brings us to a discussion of what we call our hot prospects and cold prospects. Now a lot of sponsors will have you do this with your prospect list. They will have you go through and pick what you consider your hottest prospects. The only problem is that you do not really know which ones are hot and which ones are not.

There is a better way of building this list. The key to this is to change our way of thinking. Instead of us going out to find our prospects, we want to have our prospects come to us. When our prospects come to us, then we know that we have targeted prospects. They come to us with some interest.

So our first lesson is that instead of us trying to find the needle in the haystack, we will have all of the needles coming to us, showing us that they have an interest in what we are talking about. As you build your business, start by building your list the smart way.
